President & Alternate Governor, Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club
Drafted with the second overall pick by the New Jersey Devils in 1987, Brendan Shanahan would go on to play 22 years in the NHL with the Devils, St. Louis Blues, Hartford Whalers, Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers.
During his career he captured three Stanley Cup Championships, a World Championship and an Olympic gold medal as a part of Team Canada. Remarkably, Shanahan is the only player in the history of the National Hockey League to score 600 goals and record 2,000 penalty minutes. Only 12 players in league history have scored more than Shanahan’s 656 goals and his streak of 19 consecutive seasons with 20 or more goals is surpassed only by Gordie Howe. In 2013, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
He was the recipient of the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 2003, an annual award to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice while making a noteworthy humanitarian contribution to his community.
Shanahan retired as a player on November 17, 2009 and quickly joined the NHL’s head office in December of 2009 as Vice President of Hockey and Business Development. He would later serve as the league’s chief player disciplinarian, redefining the way the NHL administered supplementary discipline for on-ice incidents.
Shanahan was named President and Alternate Governor of the Toronto Maple Leafs in April of 2014.
Since arriving in Toronto, Shanahan has led initiatives to improve the resources available to the team’s hockey operations staff and players, including the implementation of a new hockey research and analytics department as well as an innovative sports science and performance department.
He has also led the formation of the lauded Maple Leafs hockey operations department, which includes Hall of Famer Lou Lamoriello as general manager, Kyle Dubas as assistant general manager, Mark Hunter as assistant general manager, Brandon Pridham as assistant to the general manager and Mike Babcock as head coach.
